Community events and projects

  • Rivers' stories

Rivers’ Stories 2023 & 2024 placed contemporary Indigenous culture at the centre of a disability arts project that took place along the banks of Fishery Creek in Ballina (NSW). It honoured the important cultural practice of ‘yarning’ and through a variety of movement techniques made the tradition of oral knowledge sharing accessible to people with disability. Community members participated in a week-long workshop program, connecting in a rich shared experience of dance that was deeply grounded in Country and elevated the social values of care, respect and listening. Rivers' Stories was led by and in collaboration with Bunjalung Elder Julia Paden, local artists Mitch King (Yaegl/Bunjalung), Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal and Tora Crockford.

  • Dis-co Ball

Dis-Co Ball is Sprung’s new annual disability community ball, bringing people together for an evening of unashamed joyous dancing, inspired by and featuring our Community Artists. Drawing inspiration from the Met Gala (one of New York’s most prestigious and glamorous events of the year) Dis-Co Ball is a night for EVERYONE to live large on the red carpet. Reimagining this glamorous affair in a way that centers and celebrates access and inclusion.

The audience experienced amazing pop up performances, drama on the red carpet and a collective celebration of difference on the dance floor.

Join us in 2024 for the next Dis-Co Ball - a night to celebrate community, joy, connection and inclusivity.

  • Duck Race

Sprung Community Artists set sail on an immersive roving experience during the 2023 Great Rotary Duck Race in Ballina. This experience was brought to life by artists from our community programs.

  • Spring ball

This unique community arts event was a highly participatory, interactive and inclusive experience. Participants across all our community programs and the Sprung!! Ensemble artists transformed the Lennox Cultural Centre into a spring time wonderland. Audience and community were encouraged to take part in participatory dance sessions, costume making and frivolities.

The night was a huge success in connecting our vibrant and diverse communities from across the Northern Rivers of NSW.

  • AUSLAN CHOIR

During the pandemic, Sprung!! Ensemble artist Tallula Bourne established our first online AUSLAN Choir. Teaching artists and community the AUSLAN alphabet and words through some of our favourite pop songs of now and of times gone by. ‘What a wonderful world’ by Louis Armstrong, ‘Team’ by Lorde, ‘Let it Go’ Frozen.
